UNDERSTANDING PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU)

Phenylketonuria phenylketonuria is a rare inherited disorder. It impacts the organism's ability to break down an amino acid called phenylalanine. Normally, the organs creates an enzyme known as phenylalanine hydroxylase, which changes phenylalanine into tyrosine. In those suffering from PKU, this enzyme lacks function properly. As a result, phenyla
